Lori's Menu Plan for the Week of 10/3-10/9/11

My children have asked for 'traditional British' food this week for dinner as they are half-English. Rather than subject them to Liver and Onions with Gooseberry Pie, I've gone with comfort food that British children eat for tea (which is also known as supper, not the formal afternoon 'high tea' sandwiches and scones that Americans associate with the British)

Lori's Menu Plan for the Week of 9/19 - 9/25

Fall is the grounded-middle child of the seasonal family. With the steadfast optimism of a lifelong friend, Fall lets us review the year thus far before administering a gentle kick-in-the-pants to get going before another year is consigned to the dustbin of history.

Fall has two extreme siblings. Winter is clearly the eldest. She is moody: consider the extreme euphoria of the holidays followed by the grey, isolating silence of January. With her howling blizzards, Winter is boisterous and bossy, yet afterwards the sun illuminates her beautiful snow-covered landscape. On the other hand, Summer is vibrant, friendly and pretty hot. He's a charming and sunny host, generous with his warmth that miraculously grows food from a seed.

And Spring? She is sweet and welcome, like a longed-for child. But Spring is clearly the youngest in the family, always demanding attention: her tantrums are tumultuous dark thunderstorms that spawn wicked tornadoes. Spring also a bit flighty, running hot and cold as Mothers and Fathers are celebrated.

But Fall is hopeful, ushering in the start of school, the community gatherings around Halloween and the gratitude of Thanksgiving. Fall's harvest yields apples, pumpkins, grapes, corn, melons, pears, berries, mushrooms, squash and tomatoes. Fading green summer leaves slowly evolve into a fiery display of oranges, reds, golden yellow and browns. Fall whispers to my heart with every crunching footstep.

Menu Plan for the Week 8/29/11 - 9/4/11

When I was a kid, my mother's idea of cooking involved removing an orange box from the freezer, popping it in the oven for an extraordinary amount of time and then peeling back the scorching hot foil to reveal something brown and lumpy, generally with a disturbing scent that reminded me of burnt Alpo. Mom never bought instant food that I might actually like to eat on the basis that it was either too expensive (like pre-sweetened breakfast cereals with the clever commercials) or "not healthy" (I'm guessing she didn't realize how much sodium was packed into those frozen triangles of whipped potatoes and fried chicken).

As soon as I could read a cookbook, I taught myself how to bake from scratch out of sheer necessity to gain weight. From cookies and cupcakes and onward to vegetable side dishes and a million ways to prepare pasta, or spaghetti as it was known in those days. I loved the precision of baking and the creativity of cooking. By age 14, I could prepare dinner and dessert from scratch, including breads and pastries.

Lately I've been wondering how differently my children will relate to food since they rarely eat anything other than homemade meals. Will they crave McDonalds or the Krispy Kreme donuts that I only let them eat when a blue moon is present? Or will they share the same passion for food and cooking that I discovered at a young age? One thing is for certain - they are happy to leave the menu planning to me :)
